FINISHING must run in the Ogbonna family.

It was teenager Toby - rather than star striker Dubi - who set up Wisbech Town’s 4-0 Red Insure (League) Cup victory over March Town United on Tuesday night.

Undaunted by making his first start in front of 186 fans in the Fen Derby, the 18-year-old scored twice in seven second-half minutes.

Fenmen boss Steve Appleby said: “Toby gave it everything and we might have a little gem on our hands there.

“It’s going to take time and he needs to keep improving but he’s got obvious talent.”

Ogbonna was not the only youngster to excel at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium on Tuesday as Lewis Clayton toasted his 17th birthday with his first Wisbech goal.

The substitute headed home Scott Johnson’s cross before winger Matt Lunn sealed the win by converting Darren Jimson’s neat chipped pass.

But it was not all plain sailing for Appleby’s troops against a March side who were much improved from the one that was crushed 8-1 in July’s pre-season fixture.

Former Fenmen Lewis Thompson, Max Mattless, Sam Darlow and Danny Emmington helped contain their old side in a goalless first half.

Appleby said: “It was exactly as I expected it to be - from the way it started, to the way it ended. It was never going to be like the pre-season game, March have come a long way since then.

“I knew the first half would be a battle but I always felt that as soon as we got that first goal that would be it.”

The cup win, which will see the Fenmen host Newmarket Town in the next round, followed Saturday’s 3-2 win over Gorleston, which came courtesy of a Dubi Ogbonna hat-trick.

Appleby also moved to sign two goalkeepers on dual registration forms this week - Ricky Lovelace, from Boston Town, and Alex Street, from King’s Lynn Town.

The shot-stoppers will provide cover for the injured Lea Jordan and Tom Roberts - but when they return to fitness it could leave four players battling for the number one shirt.

“I had to bring keepers in because of the injuries,” said Appleby.

“What will happen after that is down to form, who responds well and who wants to wear the shirt. If I have to make choices, then I have to make choices.”

The Fenmen host Stanway Rovers in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division tomorrow.

Appleby said: “I rate Stanway and it will be a tough game but the boys are confident and they fancy themselves at the moment. It’s time to crack on now.”
