Ridgeons Premier Division: Newmarket Town 2 Wisbech Town 5

RAMPANT Wisbech Town thumped Newmarket Town to go top of the Ridgeons Premier Division last night - the first time they’ve been there for more than 20 years.

Steve Appleby’s in-form Fenmen - who have now won all three of their league fixtures this season - scored three goals inside the opening 20 minutes to stun The Jockeys.

Ollie Gale, Chris Bacon and Liam Nimmo all notched before the home side grabbed a glimmer of hope by pulling a goal back before the break.

However, second-half goals from Callum Reed and Steven Reid secured the rout. Wisbech, Wroxham, Woodbridge Town, Gorleston and Brantham Athletic are the only sides in the 21-team Ridgeons Premier Division to have a 100 per cent record this season.

Fenmen boss Appleby said: “I was delighted with the way we went forward because I thought we were going to score every time we attacked.

“However, we looked absolutely shocking at the back and we had strong words at half-time because I felt we became a bit complacent.

“They’re an honest bunch of lads so they knew they hadn’t done as well as they can but I just did it to keep people on their toes. It worked as we defended much better in the second half.

“At the end of the day I’m delighted we’ve gone away and got three points but we won’t get away with that type of performance against a better side. We’ve had a great start but it shows there’s still room for improvement.”

First-choice strike partnership Bacon and Nimmo impressed Appleby once again with the duo scoring for the second game in succession.

Bacon - who has scored one more goal than Nimmo this season - also notched during Wisbech’s last midweek game, a 2-1 win against Mildenhall Town.

The Fenmen boss said: “I think Chris and Liam have been outstanding and it’s Nick Davey I feel sorry for because he hasn’t put a foot wrong.

“They keep producing the goods and they’re keeping him on the bench because of the level of their performances. I’m absolutely delighted with all three of them.”

The title-chasing Fenmen return to action at FC Clacton on Saturday but Appleby warned his side not to rest on their laurels after their scintillating start to the campaign.

“There’s a long, long way to go and although I’m really pleased that we are top it means diddly-squat at this stage. Last year we kept trying to get up there but I wanted us in the mix from the off this year and we’ve started well.

“Let’s hope we can continue our good run because if we do we’ll have a good chance of challenging.”
