MARCH Town United took a giant step towards securing their highest league finish for more than a decade by drubbing Downham Town 7-0.

The Hares romped to their most comfortable win of the season yesterday - and delighted boss Brett Whaley insisted they could have racked up double figures.

“I can’t remember watching us beat a side like that before,” he said. “It’s no exaggeration to say it could well have been 10.

“If you’d have offered me a 1-0 win at 1pm, I would have been more than happy to take it.

“We haven’t scored enough goals all season and that’s the reason we are fighting for fourth and not fighting for promotion.

“But yesterday we looked like scoring every time we went forward.”

Striker Stu Anderson netted a hat-trick as March ran riot, with Adam Rothery, Kyle Nolan, Ash Brand and Alex Burton also on target.

Rothery had been the hero on Saturday as his 25-yard strike rescued a point for the Hares in a 1-1 draw with Cambridge University Press at the GER.

The visitors’ stoppage time goal looked to have snatched the points before Rothery’s dramatic last-gasp equaliser.

The results leave March needing two points from their final two games in order to secure fourth place in the Ridgeons First Division.

If Whaley’s troops can claim fourth, it would be the club’s highest league finish since they were relegated from the Ridgeons Premier Division in 1997.

The Hares travel to promoted Thetford Town, who they have already beaten twice this season, on Saturday.

Whaley said: “The lads came off the pitch after a 7-0 win and straight away they were saying ‘we have to turn Thetford over now’. That’s the mentality we want to see.

“Thetford haven’t scored against us yet this season and that’s something we take pride in.

“They have scored a lot of goals this year and it would be great if we could shut them out for three full games. That would be the crowning glory.”
