MARCH Town United boss Brett Whaley has hailed the example set by his back line after a weekend clean sheet gave the Hares the meanest defensive record in the league.

Whaley’s troops moved up to fifth in the Ridgeons First Division after a Luke Pepper penalty and a Stu Anderson strike gave them a 2-0 victory over Fakenham Town at the GER on Saturday.

The Hares have conceded just six goals in their first eight games - and Whaley said his side’s solid defence had been a major factor in their bright start to the season.

He said: “We didn’t play that well on Saturday but at no point did I think we were going to do anything but win the game.

“Statistically, we’ve got the meanest defence in the league. When I was at March before 1-0 was a very precarious scoreline but now I back us in those situations.

“It’s given us a very solid base to go forward from. The defence are setting a good example for the rest of the side.

“The back four have really clicked and I feel that with the attacking players we’ve got it’s only a matter of time before they click as well.”

Whaley reserved special praise for his centre-backs Adam Sutton and Chris Lenton, who have been ever-present for March this season.

He said: “Adam has progressed so far as a footballer over the last two years. He plays on his strengths and with Chris alongside him it makes a great partnership.

“Those two have played in every single game together. It doesn’t matter who you are, just playing together week in week out will make you a stronger partnership.”

The Hares travel to Long Melford on Saturday in the league (Kick-off 3pm) before taking on Ryman League outfit Soham Town Rangers on Tuesday (Kick-off 7.45pm).
