A 12-year-old from Whittlesey has been awarded gold in a worldwide karate and kickboxing event.

Hannah Cameron, who is a member of the BCKA Kickboxing & Kung Fu group, took part in the World Karate and Kickboxing Council tournament at the Trafford Sports Dome in Manchester.

More than 200 competitors were at the finals in various categories, with competitors from Germany, Slovakia, USA and Egypt.

Hannah performed a Chinese Kung Fu set, including a ‘Lau Gar Lup Hup Kuen’.

But she was not alone in her victory, as fellow club member Kim Smith came home with two bronze medals.

Hannah said: “My Dad and I started training at the Whittlesey club in both Kickboxing and Kung Fu six years ago under the fantastic guidance and support of Andy, Ritchie and Wendy.

“This year I joined the BCKA forms squad and also the WKC England team which has enabled me to start competing at a much higher level.

“This year has been fantastic as I have won several major competitions which include the British, the European and now the world championships.

“Kung Fu and Kickboxing has helped me grow in confidence and also increased my fitness levels.

“I would recommend anyone to come and try a couple of sessions as they will find the club friendly and supportive, consisting of people of all ages and fitness levels, and families can often be seen training together.

“I have found it’s been a great way to make new friends.”

It was Hannah and Kim’s first opportunity on the annual world stage event.

Executive senior instructor, Andy Whitwell, praised the pair for their hardwork.

He said: “Hannah has been working really hard for this, along with her training partner Kim Smith.

“They’re both a pleasure to teach and I fully expect them to push on from this and gain more titles.

“I have been working alongside senior instructors Ritchie Walton and Wendy Whitwell to improve the technique of Hannah and Kim.

“They made their families and the rest of the team very proud.”
