WISBECH I are through to the quarter-finals of the Harrod UK EHA Trophy following a 3-1 win at Southport.

The home team reached the semi-finals of the competition last year and they made a solid start on Saturday without posing a serious threat on the Wisbech goal.

But it was the visitors who broke the deadlock when Brad Apted's reverse stick shot found the back of the net midway through the first half.

Southport were back on level terms soon after but Wisbech restored their lead with a fortunate goal just before the break.

The home keeper made a save, only to see the ball ricochet off the umpire and into the path of Andy Mills, who tapped-in from close range.

The goal was allowed to stand despite protests from the home side and the second half became increasingly bad-tempered. Both teams lost players to yellow cards before Joe Melton's goal put the game beyond the home side.

Wisbech II hit the top of Division Four Northwest thanks to Saturday's 4-2 home win over St Neots III.

The home side were forced to come back from behind after Saints scored twice in the opening stages.

Lee Peck and Gary Freear scored a brace apiece to reward a gutsy performance.

Wisbech III also enjoyed a 4-2 home win and picked up three valuable points against Market Deeping.

The home side dominated from the start and an impressive double-strike from David Wood, together with goals from Pete Shippey and Robin Johnson, sealed the win.

Wisbech Ladies I made it a good weekend for Wisbech Hockey Club when they won 3-1 at home to Cambridge University I.

Player of the match Ellie Atkins gave the home side a half-time lead and, despite University scoring an equaliser, Wisbech continued to push forward and won the game with goals from Sue Slator and Jane Peggs.

- LONG Sutton I came away from their East Premier B game at Crostyx I with an encouraging 3-1 win.

Sutton had to come from behind when the home side opened the scoring and they deserved the three points after a good team performance.

Sweeper Jimmy Harrison levelled the scores and Will Ellis was unlucky not to add to the scoreline in the first half.

The introduction of Steve Hart had an immediate impact when he set up Sam Markillie, who put the visitors ahead.

And Hart then celebrated his first goal for the first team in 12 years to put the result beyond doubt.
