After a hard-fought league campaign, Wisbech Swimming Club took a fine second place in the Junior Fenland League after making third place in the final at Boston on Saturday.

Wisbech went into the gala one point ahead, but City of Peterborough Swimming Club’s ability to draw on swimmers in depth proved too much for the Wisbech swimmers on the night, although their determination and team spirit left them just one league point behind the larger club.

Wisbech finished the gala on 131 points, behind Boston on 149 and COPS ‘A’ on 161. The provisional league table has COPS ‘A’ winning on 38 points, with Wisbech second on 37 and Boston in third on 36.

Wisbech’s swimmers came away from the Boston competition with seven first places from 44 races and 21 new personal best times; eight seconds and 11 third places also went the town’s way.

The night’s crucial wins went to Charlie Loates 11/U 50m butterfly, Louisa Rowell 11/U 50m butterfly for a personal best, Charlie Bourne 13/U 50m butterfly (PB), Elouise Youngs 12/U 50m breaststroke (PB), Ben Knowles 11/U 50m breaststroke (PB), Billy Lane 12/U 50m butterfly and Alex Gallagher 13/U individual medley (PB).
