WISBECH Town boss Steve Appleby says goalkeeper Lea Jordan “should” win his battle for fitness in time for Saturday’s league trip to Gorleston.

The Fenmen found themselves with a sudden ‘keeper shortage this week after Tom Roberts fractured his ankle on his first senior start of the season.

Deputising for the injured Jordan, Roberts impressed in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Kirkley & Pakefield.

Appleby said: “Robbo (Roberts) came in for Jordi (Jordan) and did superb but he landed awkwardly with 20 minutes left and fractured his ankle.”

The shot-stopper stayed on the pitch despite the injury - and he did not discover it was broken until days later.

Appleby is now hoping that Jordan will be ready to return to the side for Saturday’s crucial clash with Gorleston, who sit one place below third-placed Wisbech in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division.

The game comes after Wisbech produced a fine second-half fight back to see off Kirkley.

Despite missing captain Paul Cousins and Anthony Reeve in defence, the Fenmen were rarely troubled in the first half - so it was a surprise when Kirkley took the lead with a breakaway goal.

But after a few wise words at the break, Wisbech upped the tempo in the second period and equalised within a few minutes through centre-back Jon Fairweather.

With the home side rocking, it was less than 10 minutes before the visitors moved into the lead, Adam Millson’s shot taking a deflection on its way into the back of the net.

With a lead established, Wisbech took control and wrapped up the points through Chris Bacon, who took advantage of a poor back pass to lob Kirkley’s stranded goalkeeper.
