Wisbech Town joint boss Dick Creasey hopes the return of Billy Smith will provide the spark to re-ignite the club’s season.

Pacy wide man Billy Smith is embarking on his fourth spell with the Fenmen after a stint at Peterborough Northern Star.

The 27 year-old has also played for King’s Lynn Town, Dereham Town, Soham Town Rangers and March Town United.

Creasey said: “He is very similar to Tom James, who we have missed since he moved to Australia.

“We are delighted to get him. He has a great goal scoring record this year.”

Matt Lunn’s early strike helped Wisbech draw 1-1 with Cogenhoe United in the United Counties League at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium on Saturday.

But Adam Millson’s goal could not prevent the Fenmen from losing 3-1 at home to Wellingborough Town in the league last night.

The game was marred by an early injury to Stuart Cobb, who will miss the rest of the season with medial ligament damage.

Creasey said: “Cobb’s absence is a massive blow for us. He has only been back three or four weeks but he has settled in really well.

“I’m really disappointed for him. He always shows a lot of commitment, which was lacking from the rest of our players last night.

“Without a shadow of doubt there is still a hangover from our FA Vase exit but one thing I do not like is players playing at 80 per cent.

“I understand why it has happened but I will not accept it, and I let the players know this after the game.”

Wisbech travel to second placed Rushden and Diamonds in the UCL on Saturday.

As well as Cobb, the Fenmen will also be missing Kieron Doherty and Scott Johnson, while joint boss Paul Cousins is struggling with an ankle injury and Jon Fairweather is battling on with a hamstring niggle.

Creasey said: “I’m looking for a massive response from the players, I just hope I’ll get it. I will not accept what was dished out last night.”
