A FURIOUS half time team talk from caretaker boss Julian Young inspired Chatteris Town to a thrilling victory on Saturday.

Young hit out at his players after a woeful first 45 minutes left them trailing Waterbeach 1-0 at West Street.

And his angry words provoked a reaction as second-half goals from Richie Allen, Aidan Hollis and Aaron Bailey secured a memorable 3-2 victory.

Young said: “If you were in the dressing room at half time you would have needed ear plugs.

“The first half performance was the worst I’ve seen since I took over. The effort wasn’t there and people were making bad decisions and silly mistakes.

“I can remember when I was a player they used to bring tea in china cups into the changing room at half time. After one dreadful first-half performance, 15 cups came in and seven went back.

“If there had been china cups in the dressing room on Saturday they would have gone flying.”

The Lilies went 2-0 down against the run of play on 55 minutes, prompting Young to move centre-back Tony Brown up front.

The switch paid off as Allen and Hollis netted before Bailey slotted home the winner from the penalty spot.

Young said: “We had a 20-minute spell where we looked like we were going to score every time we went forward.”

Chatteris now sit safe in 15th, eight points clear of the Kershaw Premier League bottom-two. They host Fulbourn Institute on Saturday.

Young added: “I want to go unbeaten in our last three games and try to catch Somersham.”
