Disabled dancer David Toole will be taking to the stage in Cambridge for the StopGap Dance Company’s latest production The Enormous Room.

The show focuses on the complex but poignant relationship between a father and daughter, Dave and Sam, who are both living through a grieving process after losing wife and mother Jackie.

Playing the central role is renowned dancer David Toole, who has been performing for more than 25 years despite losing both of his legs at an early age due to a congenital birth defect.

He worked as a postman for nine years before a chance meeting with his former music teacher led him to a new direction in life.

“She gave me a leaflet about an inclusive dance workshop being held by a then fledgling CandoCo Dance Company,” he said. “After giving it a lot of thought, I attended the workshop and from then my life changed dramatically.”

In the years to follow, Mr Toole went from starring in local performances to national theatre, including opera, the Royal Shakespeare Company, DV8’s classic film and stage work The Cost Of Living and performing solo in the Paralympic Opening Ceremony in 2012.

In recent years, Mr Toole has been working with the StopGap Dance Company in two outdoor pieces and two stage shows, the most recent being The Enormous Room.

Mr Toole said: “This piece was developed over many months as we get to spend the necessary time to work on ideas our unique combination of talents bring to the table to create the best and most challenging work we can.

“It began with myself and artistic director Lucy Bennett sitting in a studio and writing about our pasts and our experiences that could be used to create back stories for the characters within the piece itself.

“This piece is really a study of grief and how we deal with it. It’s something that an audience can relate to as most people have experienced losing someone at some point in their lives.”

Stopgap Dance Company’s tour launch of The Enormous Room at the Cambridge Junction will take place on Wednesday, October 3 at 7.30pm. For tickets visit: www.junction.co.uk/the-enormous-room.
