The tours will usually be available twice a day, at 11.30am and 2pm, from Monday to Saturday.

“The move is to encourage more people, both locals and visitors to the city, to find out about the magnificent architectural treasures of the building and hear its amazing stories,” said a cathedral spokesman.

“Did you know where St Oswald’s arm was kept, what happened at Katharine of Aragon’s funeral and how the building was eventually restored after the rampage of Oliver Cromwell’s troops?”

There will also be a new programme of specialist tours focusing on particular aspects of the building and its story. The first of these will be a Tudor tour at 2pm on January 27 and 28, as part of the Katharine of Aragon festival.

Tickets cost £8 (general) or £6 (concessions) and are available via www.peterborough-cathedal.org.uk or from the Information Centre, Bridge Street, Peterborough (01733 452336). Advanced booking is recommended. Other topics and ticket prices will be announced soon.

Any donations after tours will go towards cathedral funds.
