Historic buses and coaches will once again take over Whittlesey this weekend for the popular Busfest event.

There will be free services across Cambridgeshire including one to a new classic car show.

Fenland Busfest is run by the Eastern Bus Group, a Cambridgeshire-based organisation for owners and enthusiasts. on Sunday (May 21).

Market Street in Whittlesey will be closed for a major bus display, and regular services will run to Peterborough, March, Thorney, Chatteris and Ramsey, scene of new classic car show which will take place in the town centre with some 60 exhibits.

Nick Larkin said: “This will be a fantastic event with these newly preserved vehicles to sample and of course the new classic car show at Ramsey. “We have visiting vehicles and enthusiasts arriving from across the country but we hope local people will very much enjoy the event which highlights our efforts to preserve local transport history.”

Fenland Busfest visitors will have the chance to ride on both vehicles and many others, some of which will be recreating Morley’s of Whittesey’s legendary 501 service to Peterborough, he added.

Among more than 30 Busfest vehicles are two historic local double deckers saved by group members from being scrapped over the past twelve months.

The F509 NJE is the sole complete survivor of twelve Northern Counties Leyland Olympian double deckers new to Cambus in 1988.

Delivered to Peterborough depot, the bus later worked for Viscount Bus and Coach and Stagecoach, which took over in 1995.

The bus was bought for preservation from its operator for some 16 years Tiger European of Nottinghamshire.

The second bus saved is H303 CAV, a 1989 Volvo Citybus that spent 26 years in service with Cambridgeshire-based Whippet.

Also saved is H303 CAV, a 1989 Volvo Citybus new to Cambridgeshire based Whippet in 1989.
