He brought the luck of the Irish to Cambridge, captivating the crowd with charm and chart hits.

Shane Filan was the voice of Westlife, and it was my first time seeing him live as a solo artist.

I questioned whether he would be able to win over an audience without the extravagant staging and fellow bandmates by his side.

But his appearance at Cambridge’s Corn Exchange for his Love Always tour last night still proved that Shane could do what he knew best - swoon us with a love song.

The setlist sparkled as Shane stepped out suited and booted ready to give James Bond a run for his money.

Old Westlife fan favourite When You’re Looking Like That got the crowd up on their feet from the opening beat and the show continued in a similar vain throughout the evening.

The 38-year-old even teased that he would sing at an audience members wedding next year in between banter and tracks from his latest Love Always deluxe album.

Covers of some of the best love songs are included on it, from The Bangles Eternal Flame, Bryan Adams Heaven, Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now and NSync’s This I Promise You.

Yet standout moments came from Shane’s Beautiful In White sang to a backdrop of confetti as couples swayed in the aisles.

His recent single Back To You, that video features a cameo from his daughter, was also shown on the big screen during his performance - sparking a nostalgic feel of home.

Even a unusual mash up of DNCE’s Cake By The Ocean and Huey Lewis and the News’ The Power of Love went down a treat with the audience.

(He could certainly have his cake and eat it with us Cambridge girls..!)

Shane’s distinct voice appears to have matured to perfection with age and if I closed my eyes I was easily taken back to those early noughties years of listening to my Westlife cassettes.

They notched up 14 UK No.1 hit singles and concluded their tenure as a band by performing in front of an 80,000-strong crowd in Dublin in 2012.

In fact, it’s hard to believe that supremo Simon Cowell doubted that Shane could even be part of the chart-topping boyband at first - let alone go on to have a successful solo career all these years later.

But nearly two decades on, Shane certainly knew how to bring the craic to Cambridge last night - and a show that could’ve quite easily fit in on any arena stage.

(Also, shoutout to support acts Andy Brown, from boyband Lawson, and new kid on the block Max Restaino who gave a great intro set before Shane came on. They made sure they geared up the crowd for the night ahead. Check them out on Spotify!)
