The music of the Great War, from popular songs to classical choral works, will be heard at Peterborough Cathedral later this month.
The concert, which takes place on Saturday October 17 from 7.30pm, is being held to mark the centenary of the execution of Edith Cavell.
Peterborough Cathedral Choir, Youth Choir and Festival Chorus will perform a selection of songs which were written during WW1, and solo songs by Elgar, Butterworth and Gurney.
During the second half of the concert the audience will be invited to sing along to war-time classics including Sister Susie’s Sewing Shirts, Keep the Home Fires Burning and “It’s A Long Way to Tipperary”.
A rarely heard tune from the time, She was a Daughter of England, which was dedicated to the memory of heroine martyr Edith Cavell, will also be sung.
There will also be short readings in-between songs.
Steven Grahl, director of music, said: “This promises to be an unforgettable evening, in turn poignant and uplifting, as we mark the anniversary of Edith Cavell’s extraordinary life.”
