Works to enhance March Market Place as part of a £440,000 project are due to finish this week.

The project, which began in January and include improvements to the market place’s appearance and car park layout, was meant to take 12 weeks to complete.

Fenland District Council [FDC] initially hoped that the works would be finished two weeks ago but have since delayed the completion date twice.

A spokesperson for FDC said last week: “Colder than anticipated overnight weather and rainfall has delayed the completion of the Market Place.

“We are hopeful the work will be complete next week.”

The works have been carried out by contractors Milestone Infrastructure.

FDC were unable to clarify exactly when the market place is due to reopen.

Since January, markets usually held on Wednesdays and Saturdays have been held in the City Road car park while the work has taken place.

The Market Place improvements are part of a wider £8.4 million project to improve the town centre as part of the March Future High Streets Fund programme.

“[This is] funded with £6.4m from the government's Future High Streets Fund and £2m from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority,” a FDC spokesperson said.

Once reopened, the market place will boast features such as new sandstone paving, disabled parking bays, electric vehicle charging points and traffic control bollards for use on market days.

Plans to replace and refurbish public street furniture, such as benches, and lampposts are also due to come to fruition.

The market place improvements come after QD Stores and NatWest confirmed they would be closing their branches on nearby Broad Street.
